Hyperscale data centres surge toward market dominance
Hyperscale operators are rapidly taking control of global data centre capacity, now accounting for 48% of the total and projected to reach 67% by 2031, according to Synergy Research Group. This growth is driven by the expansion of cloud services and accelerating demand from AI technologies, with hyperscale capacity expected to triple in the coming years. While enterprise on-premises data centres have declined significantly – from 56% of capacity in 2018 to a projected 19% by 2031 – they will still see some growth due to AI and GPU infrastructure needs. Meanwhile, colocation providers’ market share is shrinking, though their overall capacity continues to rise. Overall, the data centre landscape is shifting decisively toward hyperscale dominance as digital and AI-driven services expand worldwide…Read more

TikTok expands European data strategy with new Finland data centre
TikTok is investing €1Bn to build a second data centre in Lahti, Finland, as part of its broader €12Bn “Project Clover” initiative aimed at strengthening data sovereignty across Europe. The move builds on an existing Finnish project and reflects Finland’s appeal due to its strong infrastructure, clean energy, and skilled workforce. While TikTok appears to be scaling back expansion plans in Ireland, it is growing its presence in the Nordics, including operations in Norway and ongoing development in Finland. The expansion also comes amid ongoing scrutiny over data privacy and TikTok’s ownership by ByteDance, with the company aiming to reassure regulators by keeping European user data stored locally…Read more
Nebius plans 310MW AI factory in Finland
Nebius has announced plans to build a new 310MW AI factory in Lappeenranta, Finland, with first capacity expected to come online in 2027, marking another major step in Europe’s expanding AI infrastructure pipeline. The project will become one of the continent’s largest dedicated AI facilities when fully deployed and builds on Nebius’s wider global push to secure more than 3GW of contracted power by the end of 2026. Alongside supporting advanced AI training and inference workloads with next-generation NVIDIA platforms, the development is also expected to deliver significant regional benefits, including hundreds of construction and permanent jobs, collaboration with local universities, and a strong sustainability focus through low-carbon power, liquid cooling, and potential heat reuse for the local district heating network…Read more
Nscale advances new Finland data centre plan
Nscale has announced plans to develop a new data centre in Harjavalta, Finland, with the proposed facility set for the Sievari industrial area in partnership with Fortum. The project builds on preparatory work launched in 2024, when Fortum signed a planning reservation agreement with the Town of Harjavalta covering zoning, marketing and grid connection support for the site. Fortum has now entered into a site securing and development agreement with Nscale and will continue supporting the project through grid connection design and permitting, while Nscale and the town begin the process towards a preliminary land sale.
