Microsoft set to invest in AI company G42

Microsoft is positioning itself at the centre of an AI boom following the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, most recently announcing an investment of US$1.5Bn into AI company G42. In an effort to deepen relations between the US and UAE, this G42 investment will be leveraged as a launch pad to other regions, accelerating Microsoft’s global expansion strategy. As part of the deal, G42, who are central to Abu Dhabi’s AI ambitions and backed by Abu Dhabi sovereign investor Mubadala, will harness Microsoft’s cloud computing platform, Azure. This investment is set to strengthen Abu Dhabi’s position as a hub for AI, cementing its place as a credible technology partner and pushing them closer to a transitioned economy away from oil. Oman internet exchange launched in Equinix MC1

Awasr, AMS-IX, and Alliance Networks have teamed up to launch the Oman Internet Exchange at Equinix’s MC1 data centre in Muscat. The new launch of Oman-IX will establish a neutral internet exchange and connection between telecom industry network providers, hyperscalers, data centres, and cloud services across the Middle East. This new IX point serves as a significant milestone in Oman’s digital transformation, helping to strengthen Oman’s digital landscape and accelerate the Sultanate’s interconnectivity to global networks – providing a robust and reliable digital ecosystem in Oman, contributing to the enrichment of connectivity and facilitating the seamless exchange of data across borders…Read more

Aramco and GCT sign 5G chip deal

Saudi Aramco has entered an MoU with GCT to develop 5G chipsets, hoping to support the localisation of wireless end-user devices and IoT manufacturing in Saudi Arabia – with a special focus on pushing AI-driven features. This strategic agreement follows Aramco Digital’s, the oil company’s digital and technology subsidiary, partnership with Intel to build an Open RAN development centre in the Kingdom. Iraq and Kuwait create a Gulf-Europe telecom corridor

Kuwait’s Zajil Telecom alongside Iraq’s Informatics and Telecommunications Public Company, a division of the Ministry of Communications, have entered a strategic agreement to create a telecom corridor connecting the Gulf to Europe. Passing through Iraqi sea and land ports, this new corridor is positioned to strategically boost the country, enhancing its status and financial prospects in the regional telecom sector.
